Y.S.: "The Figurehead was always a track that really stood out in an album that is already impressive in its own right. The first time I heard it, when the vocals started, I misheard the words as, “Schopenhauer, leave me alone, I’m sleeping less every night.” I learned later that Robert Smith actually sang, “Sharp and open, leave me alone,” but what I initially heard stuck with me. At the time, I was reading and re-reading Schopenhauer’s ‘The World as Will and Representation’ and was obsessing over the fourth part of it, which deals with the denial of the will to live. I was in an unhealthy state of mind at the time and was struggling with insomnia for a long time. Because of this, our homage to this masterpiece of gloom and dejection features slightly altered lyrics."
